THE NAVEL

There is at least one spot in every dream at which it is unfathomable – a navel, as it were, that is its point of contact with the unknown. Majda Gregorič-Trost has taken this statement by Sigmund Freud into account and used it as the basis for her work. The word navel first makes us think of the cut umbilical cord and the scar in the middle of our stomach, whereas metaphorically the navel is the centre of the physical and spiritual world, or something as undefined as the rudiment of a new life form.
Majda – who, as she says herself, follows her intuition and proceeds from her multicultural and female experience – has chosen a primal material for her work: soil. Something tangible and kneadable, with which she seeks to express what is intangible and hidden behind seven seals. All forms of life, if followed superficially, are repeatable, predictable, and unexciting, but any medium close shot, if we are only sensitive enough, can amaze us. It is then that we must take the space and time to reflect on ourselves. To this end, Majda has come up with a swinging device.
