PREŠEREN FUND AWARD WINNER

8. February 2015

This year’s winner of the Prešeren Fund Award, Marko Jakše, has put sixteen of his works on display at Atelje Galerija. In over twenty years of involvement with the Slovenian artistic scene, the academy-trained painter has established himself as an idiosyncratic artist with fantastic motifs, which, through painted provocations, leads the viewer into a world of symbolically tranquil melancholy. This is an artist who can and does have a lot to say, and who uses a unique way to combine modern cultural elements, archetypes, and sublime expressions of his subjective experience of his inner word.

Ferdinand Šerbelj wrote the following in the publication accompanying the Prešeren Fund Award ceremony:

“Just like his paintings, with often poetic titles that guide the viewer into a surrealist or subconscious world like psychonauts exploring our inner worlds, his solo exhibitions with meaningful titles are a vademecum into the artist’s ballads and the fantastic world beyond. Jakše has presented his artistic poetry at many solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad, for which he has received numerous Slovenian and international recognitions and awards.”
